What are keywords and why are they important? Well, I’m here to explain it to you! Keywords are how consumers find your business when searching on the internet. There are three main things you must focus on when choosing your business’s keywords:

Keywords need to be relevant:

               When choosing keywords for your company your focus is finding words that are related to your company’s content. You want to use words that accurately represent your products and services. For example, I’m going to be using the local business, Lamour’s, as an example. Lamour’s is the local hippie shop located on East Main Street here in Radford. They use key words related to their products including crystals, incense, tapestries, hippie clothes, and more. This allows consumers to find them easily online just by using relevant keywords. This is in important step all businesses should consider when choosing keywords.

Keywords need to generate enough search traffic:

               When choosing keywords you must see if those keywords are in demand. Are consumers searching for your keywords and generating traffic? This will affect how your business’s website is ranked online because the more your keywords generate traffic the higher ranked your business will be on Google. A business can use Google autocomplete and Google AdWords to check the demand of their keywords.

Keywords ideally have low competition:

               There are two types of keywords, long-tail and fat head, these can help you stand out from your competition. Long-tail key words are multi-word phrases. These are often used because the longer the keyword the less competition online.  Fat head key words are one core term as a key word or a single keyword. When choosing keywords, the more complex the word the less competition, but this can also result in less consumers searching that keyword.

               In conclusion, keywords are important for consumers to find your business online. When choosing the right keywords for your business there are many things to consider like relevance, traffic, and competition.  Keywords are important for a company’s SEO and how they are ranked online. There are many things that effect SEO, but keywords are the first step of directing consumers to your company’s website.
