Effective Websites: Weather Edition

201

If you haven’t looked at the weather forecast for the week, you should. Weather has a huge impact on online sales and what advertisements are directed towards you. This past week, we discussed many topics, but the impact of the weather on your online experience was the most interesting.

Heavy rain, hail in forecast for Animas Basin – The Durango Herald

On rainy days, online businesses are likely to flood the internet with advertisements because that is the weather when people spend the most time on their computers. One article stated that online sales increase 10-12% on rainy or cloudy days. This may seem like common sense, more people don’t go to stores on days that are bad weather, but we don’t recognize it ourselves. Think about the last time you bought something online. Was it on a rainy or cloudy day? Studies show that more than likely it was!

On sunny, warm days online sales decrease, therefore advertisers and online businesses don’t put as many advertisements online. You are more likely to be outside and going into stores than on your computer. My personal opinion is the first days of Spring or Summer, when it first starts to get warm, are some of the highest traffic days for retailers. These days are also some of the lowest traffic days for websites. I know that I personally would much rather be outside on a sunny warm day than a cold or rainy day.
