Online advertising influenced by the weather

How can the weather influence online spending & advertising?

Have you been outside today? Have you checked what the weather app calls for this week? In doing so, may determine what type of online advertisements may cross your screen as you browse though different websites. In my course Digital Marketing at Radford University, an interesting topic that we discussed this past week was how the weather outside can influence online advertisements and online spending. Though it may not seem like there would be a correlation between the two, surprisingly the two are very easily related.

Typically, when it is warmer outside, people enjoy being outdoors, spending meaningful time with friends and family and less time on the internet. With that, online shoppers and regular internet users are less likely to purchase items online. Websites are then less likely to display certain advertisements, promotions, sales, etc., due to the lack of traffic flowing through a particular website.

On the other hand, shoppers feel more inclined to spend more when the weather is cooler, rainy, or snowy when being outside is not really an option. Websites recognize this and will add in different advertisements and promotions. Traffic through websites tend to increase in these conditions as consumers feel more inclined to resort to their electronic devices. Websites that consistently do this and monitor different the different forecasts have great marketing and utilize their shoppers experience to the max. I personally increase my time on the internet shopping or browsing for this particular reason. I love being outside enjoying the nicer weather as outdoor activities are some of my time things to do.
