If you’re anything like myself, knowing the difference between vector quality and raster quality images is essential!
My favorite topic right now is Vector vs. Raster. I enjoy looking at photography and I often save images, so I have always noticed that some have different qualities when I zoom in. I was never aware before that vector images do not blur when in zoom while raster images do, but I am now and I’m here to tell you why!
Raster images are created with pixel-based programs or captured with a camera. Raster quality is more common overall (gif, jpg, png) and is widely used online. So it’s safe to say you can have some fun with raster imaging! However, there is no way to increase the size of an image without lowering the resolution of the image overall.
Vector images are created with vector software, which uses mathematical calculations to form lines and shapes of an image. If you zoom into a vector graphic, the resolution will always look the same.
So, one might say that vector imaging is a great choice for high resolution no matter the size. Raster has its own pros though. Photographs are always raster images. Converting a photo to a vector image can be done, but will usually result in lower detail.
Both vector and raster imaging are favorable for different reasons. That’s why you should know the difference!
Shaelyn,
I also wrote about vector and raster. I think that this is such an interesting and important aspect of photography and digital marketing. You bring up a great point in the fact that raster is more widely used than vector. However, I feel that consumer would be overall more happy with vector. Most times, when we are online, we want to be able to zoom in and not lose any quality in the image we are looking at. The fact that vector uses mathematical equations to execute the image just shows how much of a higher quality vector images can be
Knowing the difference between vector and raster is vital in the digital world. When creating art in Adobe Creative Cloud, you have to use vector or the finished product will not be high quality. I learned this skill very early on when I was learning Illustrator and now i make sure to add “vector” when finding images.
