Have you ever heard about keywords? Did you know that choosing the right keywords for you business is important when trying to get consumers to see your website when online? For this blog, I am going to tell you what keywords are, why they are so important, and how to choose the right keywords.

So, what are keywords? Just like you can imagine, keywords are single words or a phrase/combination of words that are used to correctly target consumers to your website. To make it simple, when you first get onto the internet, what do you usually type in the search bar when looking for coffee, for example? Most people type something referring to “coffee near me” or “affordable coffee”. This phrase that consumers type in the search engine are keywords. These words are what will bring up your business or company on google pages. Since you know what keywords are, now let me explain how to choose the right keywords for your business.

The three main ideas that you need to know when choosing which words to use. Those three things include needing to be relevant, have to be able to generate search traffic, and should have low competition. Now I will dig a little deeper into these three topics.

Relevance is so important when choosing the right keywords. These words that you choose need to comply with your website and what you are about. If you are a coffee business, you need to have keywords like “best coffee”, “takeout coffee”, “expresso”, etc. Remember, these keywords need to be relevant to what consumers would type in google when searching for your product.

Keywords need to be able to generate search traffic. By this, I mean that these words need to be words that people will actually search for or have a higher demand of searching these words. Some keywords might even be searched more frequently during a specific season, so if there is a specific time of the year you want to better target consumers, make sure those words will generate the traffic at those times.

Finally, the keywords that you choose for your website need to be in low competition. If you decide to use words that are not competitive, not used very often, then most likely your website will not show up on google pages. You need to choose words that people will use everyday and are not complicated. When searching for a coffee shop, for example, people will most likely type in simple phrases rather than making it complicated on themselves. So, choosing familiar words and simple phrases will be a greater advantage for your website rather than trying to be too complicated.
