The big spools of orange wire are fiber optic cable, and they are what the internet “travels” on. Fiber optic is currently the fastest type of internet service, and many localities are just beginning to install fiber. Installation crews must use directional drills to bore through the ground, without digging directly down, and pull the cable through the hole.
Unlike traditional internet cables which use electricity to transmit information, fiber optic cables use light. The light travels much faster than electricity, and therefore yields faster internet speeds.
