4 Simple Steps to Making Your Own Website

Step 1

Get a host

First, you will need to find a host for your website. A "Host" or "Hosting Service" isn't the person you talk to when you want a good seat at a restaurant. A "Host" is a place that holds all of your websites, customers, and companies information. It also allows an organization or an individual to post a website/webpage to the internet.  The "Hosting Service" hosts their clients websites on a computer called a server. But in order for a "Hosting Service" to work you must own a "Domain Name".

Step 2

Register a Domain Name

Basically, a Domain Name is your websites name. In order for an individual to access your website your must have a unique name that no one else has taken. Computers find your website through a series of numbers. To make it easier for humans to find an individual must create a Domain Name. 

You can register your Domain Name through ICANN.org, which is a website that is certified to sell Domain Names.

There are different Domain Extensions that a person can use to classify what their website. The basic extensions include .com, .edu, .gov, .net, .gov, .mil, and .org.

  1. .com - Stands for commercial. It is the most popular extension used for webpages. This extension is now open to the public but before the 90's you could only be .com if you were a commercial entity
  2.   .gov -  Is only used for designated U.S. government agencies.
  3.   .net - Today it is mostly used in the advertising sector and by network operators to substitute .com
  4.   .mil - This domain extension is only used for U.S. government military website
  5.   .org - Today this domain extension is usually used for open-source projects, communities, for-profit entities, and schools

 

Step 3

Build Your Website

When building a website it is sometimes best to outsource this process to avoid some detrimental mistakes. Someone that is not a professional may not secure your website correctly, and this could lead to stolen information and stolen products. But for the purpose of this blog I can show you 4 basic things you should have knowledge of when creating a webpage.

  1. HTML - Is the standard mark up language for webpages. This will help structure you website.
  2. CSS - Will describe how elements are displayed on your website. This will style your website.
  3. Java Script- Will give your website more complex features. This will give your website logic.
  4. Databases- this will allow you website to hold information.

Step 4

Put Files

The last step is putting your webpage to the internet. To do this you will send your files through your ISP (internet service provider) to your hosting service. Which will let people find your website on the internet.
