Single Opt-In vs. Double Opt-In

Email marketing is booming. It’s one of the best ways to engage with people and convert them into potential customers. But before any of this happens, you have to get them to subscribe to your newsletter. This is where the opt-in methods come into play. Which one is better for your company? That’s up to you to decide. Here are the two types of opt-in methods and their advantages and disadvantages.

Single Opt-In

This is when people sign up via subscription form and are automatically added to the email list of the company. They will start getting emails from the business right away without having to confirm their subscription. This is a major advantage since the company can build their email list quickly and grow faster and does not have to worry about unconfirmed users since they are automatically added. However, this method can run the risk of being reported as spam. Subscribers may forget they even subscribed and mark it as spam, which is easier than simply unsubscribing. You can also end up with fake emails on a single opt-in email list of people who have no intention in being real subscribers.

Double Opt-In

This is when people sign up via subscription form and have to confirm their email subscription by clicking on a link provided. This method allows for a more engaged email list. People who subscribe and confirm are usually users that actually want to keep informed of the business and be responsive to those emails. These subscribers are less likely to mark emails as spam. Also, it provides a clean set of subscribers that allow for accurate subscriber data which focuses on quality instead of quantity. Nonetheless, this method requires more time to sign up, which can lead to users not verifying their subscription.
