10 Tips for Improving Organic Search Results for Your Website

Before we start counting, let’s address the elephant in the room. That elephant’s name is SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. We’ve all heard it, along with a hundred different explanations. Well, sit back and relax while I break it down Barney-style for you.

Simply put, it is constructing your website so that when someone searches a topic that is relevant to your website, you come up first.

In the immortal words of Ricky Bobby, “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”

Gentlemen, START YOUR search ENGINES!!

1. Always use the right key…word

Keywords should be relevant and directly related to the content of your site.

2. The only time autocomplete is helpful

Use Google Autocomplete for keyword suggestions and to see what people around you are searching for.

3. Long-tail and Fat Head aren’t just nicknames for the family pet

Long-tails are multi-word, key phrases, whereas Fat Heads are one core term as a keyword.

Long-tails may have much less competition, but Fat Heads have the higher search volume.

4. Let’s go inside the Matrix

Hidden inside the code of a website are short pieces of text and descriptors of the content, that are not viewable on the site itself.

These are for the search engines, and tell them what your website is about.

5. TAG! You’re it!

There are Title tags and Description tags that you can utilize by inserting relevant keywords and telling people “Why” they should visit your site.

6. Are you heading in the right direction?

Always use keywords in your headings and subheadings, because that’s how search engines determine the content and keywords for your site.

7. Don’t get lost. Use a Map.

A site map, that is. Your site map can be submitted to Google’s Search Console, so that search engines can crawl through and index your website.

8. Keep it fresh, yo!

Update your website with Fresh Content on a regular basis. Unique content will increase your ranking. Don’t let it go stale.

9. Bouncy like a brick?

For websites, this is actually a good thing. A bounce rate is the percentage of people who visit your page and immediately exit without engaging with any content. A high bounce rate could signify low relevance to that search.

10. Analyze this!

Google Analytics allows you to measure almost every performance aspect of your site and capitalize on the knowledge you gain.

  1. I like the fact that you put Barney and the kids as a gif, showing us SEO that it isn’t really as threatening as it seems initially.

    1. I can understand how you would make that connection, but it is actually a reference to a phrase from the Marine Corps. When you break something down “Barney-Style,” it means to explain it in the simplest way possible. It was my goal to explain SEO in a way that everyone can understand, and not just industry insiders that know all the lingo.

  2. Good, interesting blog. The numbered list and the abundance of pictures made this blog really fun and easy to read!

  3. I enjoyed the amount of gifs and pictures you used. I also have to thank you for not making me read as much and still getting the point across! lol
