Web design can easily make it or break it for your website. The images, font, and even overall theme you choose are crucial to attracting viewers. I find this subject interesting because there are so many factors you have to consider when designing a website.
Depending on your audience, the font size and color palette can turn the viewers off and you will lose customers. For example, if you were building a site geared towards senior citizens, you would maybe have the body font at 18 rather than 12. Your homepage would also be simplified with less redirects and images. You would also want your contact information easily seen on your page so they can call if they have any questions.
Another thing to keep in mind is consistency. It is best to use the company’s color palette and preferred text font, but if there is not a set standard, keep it simple. The colors should not clash with each other or the images and should be more natural and organic. As for the text, an easy to read and common font will be the best choice. Bold important information and if you are embedding a link, make sure it is obvious to the viewer.
Hi Beth,
I agree with everything you said in your blog. You are right about everything point you made. I liked that you said “keep it simple” and used some examples like the natural and organic colors or images that would go perfect with any type of website. I also really liked the image that you chose because it has to do with all the things that shouldn’t be done when creating a website.
Hi Beth,
I couldn’t resist looking at your post after seeing the funny excerpt and retro-looking feature image! As strange as it seems, I probably would browse around the site, just to feel like I’m going back in time. But website builders and companies definitely need to remember the importance of web design (“Web design can easily make it or break it for your website”). If I saw Coca-Cola or Publix with a design like the one above, I would think there was a bug or something.
Anyways, you provided some great examples. Having a 12pt font and 50 different images would not be appreciated by elderly users. The possibilities of website building have grown a lot since the 90s, so thankfully we can easily achieve all of your suggestions with a click of a button.
