Know Your Target Market

Social media is overpowering the world.  Consumers rely heavily on technology to do daily tasks and marketers have to keep up with the trends. Marketers not only have to be aware of the changes, but the obedience to adapt quickly. In order to create an effective website, the marketing team must know their target market before anything else.

The marketing team could create an extravagant website, but if it is not tailored to the specific target market, the website itself could be useless. I want to discuss a few important target markets that I learned in my digital marketing class and how marketers could improve their website to drive in more traffic.

1. A 16-year-old girl Obsessed with Shopping

This is an important target market to understand because this generation relies heavily on technology. After thorough research, the marketing team can conclude that 16-year-old girls need a simple website with lots of pictures to enhance their shopping experience. Usually at this age, their patience levels are low meaning everything on the website needs to be visibly seen and easy to access or they will quickly move to another website.

2. Middle-Aged Businessman and Businesswoman

From a marketing perspective, this target market is a huge sector of the population. Businessmen and Businesswomen do not have a lot of time on their hands. Websites need to be easily organized and to the point to make their experience as smoothly as possible. Not only should the websites be easy to navigate, but it should also entail fancy text and be presentable. These target consumers will judge the most on the looks of the website since they know the importance of showing off their business in a well-manner.

3. A Senior Citizen in a Nursing Home

Believe it or not, senior citizens still love to shop. My grandma is obsessed with those TV Channels that sell product after product where you call the number to purchase. With that being said, websites targeted to this age group should have larger text and pictures to be easily seen. In addition, the phone number for the website needs to be visibly seen at all times in case they rather do the purchase over the phone.

Overall, knowing your target market is key to success with producing an effective website. Having your niche is crucial to building trust and getting loyal customers. This topic stood out to me in class because I did not even consider about how a website needs to be tailored to the primary target market in order to be effective. Furthermore, this lesson taught me the importance of marketing research in finding the primary target markets. “If you try to market to everyone, you’ll end up marketing to no one”.

  1. Well said! In terms of blog design, your 1, 2, and 3 headers are what I see first (big and bold), and read them before the paragraph-style introduction of the blog. I do like how you reviewed some examples of consumer types, since that was an engaging class activity and effectively helps drive connecting pieces of the lecture. My blog’s featured image had improper dimensions, so it looks cut off before you click on the blog. I wasn’t sure how to fix that for the thumbnail, so I am glad you did not run into that problem. Also, thank you for completing your blog so soon, I (and probably the entire rest of the class) was able to get a better idea of what to do.

  2. Hi Zoe,

Well said! Nowadays we are living in an era where everything is becoming digital and social media is truly overpowering the world. When a company is deciding to go online and have their own website it is essential that they know their target. The examples given in class that you are mentioning in your blog are great examples of knowing your target. As time is changing, people and their wants and needs change too. For this reason, it is very important that a company is aware of the changes of their target’s wants and needs and adapt quickly. Great quote at the end of your blog! “If you try to market to everyone, you’ll end up marketing to no one”. This shows how important it is to know who your target is in order to know the purpose of your website.

  3. Hey Zoe, nice blog post. I enjoyed reading this as it was informative, organized, and honest. Overall, this was a good overview of the discussion we had in class the other day. Also, great end quote; I feel like a lot of people tend to forget this!
