Social Media is a way to communicate with others in online communities by sharing various content, however, with the way that social media has drastically consumed our lives, social media isn’t always a good thing. In this blog, we will discuss the myths behind social media and how social media has a balance of good and bad. Some examples of social media include: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, MySpace, YouTube, Snapchat, and even WordPress where I am creating this blog.

The Myths:
- Good social media must go viral- This isn’t necessarily true. Social media doesn’t have to go viral to be good.
- Social media is free- Social media isn’t free. It’s costing us our time and digital marketers money.
- Good social media must reach millions of people- Social media can be good without reaching millions of people. For instance, Tumblr isn’t reaching as many users as it used to, but it’s still good social media.
- Social media should function independently of traditional media- Sometimes using both social media and traditional media can help to hit multiple target markets.
The Bad:
- For starters, too much social media in everyday life can be addicting for consumers.
- It’s costing us our time.
- Companies that post too much on social media can come off as annoying to consumers.
- Companies that don’t post enough or at all on social media miss opportunities to reach people.
- Social media never sleeps, so if something goes wrong, it may be too late to fix it.
The Good:

- It’s good for learning about different companies that engage in social media.
- It helps companies reach out to different target markets.
- It’s great for sales, promotions, and discounts.
