How the Internet Truly Works

Common misconceptions

Most believe the internet is in the clouds or travels in the air by frequencies like cellphones. Some think it’s something that always has been around we just now know how to use it but the truth is the internet is all connected underground with hundreds of wires. These wires are connected to almost everywhere and your router is the one connected to those wires producing the internet signal. The wires are normally copper or fiber optics with a heavy protective casing around them.

The Basics

Imagine the internet as a line, that line can be connected directly to different servers that hold websites on their hard drives. Your personal laptops and cellphones arent servers so they have to use an ISP (Internet Service Provider) like DSL to connect to that line that is called the internet. Using the ISP on a phone or laptop you can now access browsers, websites, and emails.

Emails

We all probably get a few emails a day and probably think nothing of it, well I’m gonna go through the process of how emails are sent. First, you need to get on an ISP with your phone or laptop then access the server you use email for example gmail.com. If you want to send an email to a friend that uses hotmail.com you write the email then send it to their name@hotmail.com. Google then transfers it to the hotmail.com server at which then your friend will have to log onto hotmail.com to receive said email. The fascinating part is this all happens in a matter of seconds!
