Effective Websites: Importance of Web Design

Last class, we took a look at different coffee websites and how they utilized different color schemes, word fonts, and images to set a specific tone for their brand image. In this post, I will be examining the three websites and giving my personal opinion on their different web designs.

Home | The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf company used a color scheme of purple and white which I thought gave it more of a subtle tone. I enjoyed the opening tab as it offers mouth-watering images of their new products and also displays a button titled “FIND A STORE” giving potential customers a location to purchase the product. In the top right corner theirs a small button titled “ONLINE LABOR DAY SALE” which I think the company should enlarge and position closer to the middle of the page as it is very easy to miss. Overall I enjoyed the imagery and color scheme that this website used.

What is Coffee? (ncausa.org)

This informative website dives deep into everything a person needs to know about coffee. Though this website is used for educational purposes, I do think their web design could have been better. The website uses a very small font size, which could make it hard for some viewers to read. They also do not use much of a color scheme, as the majority of the web page is black and white causing it to look bland. Adding more images and videos to help explain to the viewer what’s going on could also give the webpage some life. Though the webpages purpose is not to try and sell you anything, I still think giving it some more color and images would enhance the user’s experience.

Death Wish Coffee Company: World’s Strongest Coffee | Best Coffee

Out of the three websites we have examined, I would say Death Wish Coffee Company has the best website design. The black and red color scheme gives off an intense tone that compliments their slogan “Worlds Strongest Coffee”. Almost all of the text they use is very large and also in all caps, which also gives off an intense tone which I enjoyed. Adding special effects like smoke to some of the images they use draws the user’s attention to the product. The final thing I enjoyed about the website is their skull logo that shows up at the top of the page and follows the viewer as they scroll up and down. The intense tone of this website makes me want to purchase Death Wish Coffee.
