Vector vs. Raster

Vector graphics are made up of points, lines, curves, and basic shapes that are calculated for every level of scale. The quality of vector images stay the same regardless of how big or small the image is. However, since these graphics are much simpler than raster graphics, they tend to somewhat limit the amount of detail included in the image.

When to use vector graphics:

The most common types of vector images are logos and icons due to its high quality. This is very important for businesses because a vector image can be used for something as small as a business card to something as big as a billboard.

These images can be created using programs like Adobe Illustrator and Sketch.

Common file formats for vector graphics:

.ai (Adobe Illustrator document)

.eps (Encapsulated PostScript)

.svg (Scalable Vector Graphic)

.pdf (Portable Document Format) only when saved from vector programs

Raster graphics are made up of a bunch of tiny pixels. From a distance, these pixels form a clear image. They have no limit to how detailed or complex the images can be, which tends to make the files sizes way bigger than vector images. However, as you zoom in to thse images, you can immediately notice a drop in quality.

When to use raster graphics:

Raster images are most commonly used in photographs.

These images can be edited using programs like Adobe Photoshop.

Common file formats for raster graphics:

.tiff (Tagged Image File Format)

.psd (Adobe Photoshop Document)

.pdf (Portable Document Format)

.jpg (Joint Photographics Expert Group)

.png (Portable Network Graphic)

.gif (Graphics Interchange Format)

.bmp (Bitmap Image File)
