Social media has become a huge part of our daily lives. Whether you are viewing your friends posts on Instagram, watching a video go viral on Twitter or seeing an advertisement for that new mouthwatering four cheese pizza from your favorite pizza joint, we are constantly surrounded by this media. Yet, everyone has the same goal. Everyone is on social media to market themselves or market their products.

Let’s dive deeper into what makes a post or advertisement effective for reaching your target audience.

These STEPPS seem to work well in both marketing yourself as well as a company marketing a product.

  • Social Currency – People want to share things that bring themselves in a positive light. For example, you wouldn’t post an ugly photo of yourself on instagram now would you? Of course not, why would a company take an ugly marketing photo? Exactly…
  • Triggers – When you make an advertisement, you may want to take into consideration that makes people easily remember that topic. You want to be able to draw their attention with how your brand associates with that trigger word. You want them to think of your brand every time they see that trigger.
  • Emotion – To reach the highest audience you want them to feel connected to your product. The best way to do this is through active emotions. You want your viewers to engage with the advertisement by feeling either extreme joy, which they hope to share to their network to bring them joy or even anger, which in turn forces them to share their disapproval with their network. All publicity is good publicity!
  • Public – People feel inclined to jump on the bandwagon when everyone else is doing something. Share your brand to as many as you can in your network and fill up that bus!
  • Public Value – When posting an advertisement, you need to make sure that you are marketing to your target market. You do not want to make something so luxurious that it looks unreasonable if your target market can’t necessarily relate to that. Be smart, strategic and active engage with your target market.
  • Stories – Make yourself standout! People love talking about themselves, why shouldn’t your brand? Attach a good story behind your brand, what makes your brand unique and why people should attach themselves to it. You create a great opportunity for story telling and before you know it, your audience is doing the advertising for you!
