It’s 2019, and technology is pretty much part of our daily lives. If you’re not browsing on your laptop, you’re probably browsing through your smartphone. With so many applications, widgets, and functions, people tend to bring their smartphones with them everywhere. Sometimes they can’t even take their eyes off them, as some people even downloading apps (e.g. Forest) to control their addiction and limit their dependence on technology now…well isn’t that ironic. So why is this unpleasant information important? As a marketer, this is your chance to reach out to your customers, and even new audiences. How? Through social media.
According to Emarsys, “42% of the world’s population uses social media. That’s 3.2 billion users worldwide”. 3.2 billion people, that are more likely to ignore your printed ad while they’re browsing through their phones on the checkout line. Further, GlobalWebIndex found that “54% of social browsers use social media to research products”. So, it’s clear that social media plays a huge role in many consumers’ lives, so it’s time for you to make your mark!
Before you dive into the world of social media, you should understand and familiarize yourself with the various platforms available. This includes sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit. Each platform is unique as functions, features, and users vary. For example, a company may use Facebook to create a fanbase, while another may register for LinkedIn to connect with businesses and professionals. Identify your brand and objective and select the best platform for your company. With loads of features available on each platform, many companies and organizations tend to use multiple platforms to build their brand, reach new audiences, and expand their channels of communication.
Engaging with customers online is great, but that’s not the only thing social media is used for. It’s also a great hub for data collection. Using collected cookies, user comments, activity, and profiles, marketers have the power to follow their followers. It may sound strange and creepy, but many marketers use social media analytics to create and develop their marketing strategies. Collecting data from their followers, likes, interactions, and taggings, marketers can gain insight and figure out how to become more appealing to their audience. Following your followers’ [activity] can help you understand their behavior (e.g. usual login time, buying behavior, etc.) and create better content, on print and online. It’s not creepy, it’s 2019.
